TRIPLETT 2025 Coastal Ride

Bill and Lynne ride the Gulf coast

Oyster capital, fog, and U.S. Highway 98

Day 9: Port St Joe, FL to Crawfordville, FL; 73.9 miles, fog, sun and 89 degrees

So, who knew, but Apalachicola, FL is the proclaimed Oyster Capital of the World, but we did not see any oysters LOL. We rode around Apalachicola Bay today and through a few small towns before arriving in Crawfordville. It’s another small town in FL. We spent the entire day on U.S. Highway 98. We passed through woods (probably cypress) before arriving at the bay and spent the rest of the ride with on-again off-again views of water.

There was some fairly dense fog as we started out this morning, but we wanted to get moving because of the expected heat.

We crossed a four-mile bridge in the fog, but worse than the fog were the bugs that flew into us as we rode. I wondered if maybe there wasn’t fog, but just a swarm of bugs, but alas, it was both.

Four-mile bridge

Our lunch stop was a proper beach with shaded tables and flush toilets. It is a beach that was used to train for the WWII D-Day Normandy landings.

Our afternoon stops were a water stop along the road and an RV Park – both had shade, which was a treat.

An interesting road sign…

For those in suspense from yesterday’s post, Shoobie is a Jersey shore term that was applied to day-trippers to the shore that used to pack a lunch and a change of clothes in a shoebox.

And finally, the shower here is an 8. It’s a tub, so can’t score higher than an 8.

That’s funny! I thought Shoobie was a name for tourists that wear shoes to walk along the beach but your definition makes much more sense.

Suzanne – your guess makes sense too. You were very close.
