Devil’s Throat and Sandboarding

Tuesday, April 8 – Sunny

Today started with a pickup by Percy and our driver for the day, Roy, to travel a short distance to the start of our “trek” up to, and through, the Devil’s Throat, which is a canyon carved by water.

We first “scrambled” up some rocks to reach a plateau where we viewed some petroglyphs that we were told are from 2000 BC.

We saw the first plant life…we might call them weeds and maybe they kind of are like weeds. Since it was just the rainy season, there is some greenery in some areas. And there were even flowers and most of you know that I love flowers.

We hiked on until we arrived at an overlook of the canyon. We sat there for a bit before beginning the descent into the canyon floor for our hike out.

The hike through the canyon gave us many interesting views.

The mouth of the canyon emptied out to the San Pedro River. We might call it a stream or creek, but the people here consider it a real river – perhaps during the rainy season. You know 5 ml of water can make quite the river in a flash flood.

We spent a little time exploring San Pedro in the afternoon, including a stop for an empanada before we were picked up for our evening excursion.

The local barbed wire is quite interesting.

Our evening excursion was interesting – even for the adventurers that we are – Sandboarding. The remainder of our group was made up of four newly graduated university students from the UK. Quite a difference in age and ability, but we tried.

I would include the videos of our efforts, but I haven’t figured out how to add a video to these posts and Bill claims that he felt like he was a toddler learning to walk. LOL
