TRIPLETT 2025 Coastal Ride

Bill and Lynne ride the Gulf coast

Drygalski Fjord, South Georgia

Day 14 – Another sunny day and more seals

We spent most of the day in Larsen Cove, which is at the front of Drygalski Fjord. We took an hour zodiac cruise in the cove. We saw all kinds of lichen and some wildlife.

The rugged mountains were stunning to view in sunlight.

In this photo, you can see our ship, Viking Octanis at the mouth of the cove.

We saw some birds and a few seals. This picture shows elephant seals. Not the big bulls with the elephant nose, but still elephant seals.

We also saw Weddell seals. They look like slugs on the snow. This one was shy at first, not wanting to show his face.

After a bit and some encouragement from me, I said “show your face,” he did let me get a picture of his cute face.

We also saw, a petrel (they are a group of species that run along the surface of the water before taking flight), and a blue-eyed shag, as well as more Antarctic terns.

There are no trees or even shrubs on the island, but there is

As we were preparing to leave Larsen Cove, for Antarctica, the captain made an announcement that he was going to take the boat into the Drygalski fjord so that we could see the glaciers. Too bad it was starting to cloud over…but it was still nice to see how huge the glaciers are.

The crew served hot apple cider to us as we stood in the cold wind to capture the beauty of the fjord. The hot cider was nice and it made me want the cute little double walled cups that they served the cider in. They are Villeroy & Boch. Many of the dishes are also Villeroy & Boch.

In the evening, Bill and I enjoyed dinner at the Italian restaurant on board the ship.

There was also a talk by the historian. The topic was Ernest Shackleton and his ill-fated journey to try to cross the Antactic continent. The boat became shipwrecked on the northern coast of Antartica and he and his crew were forced to live in the lifeboat – over a year later they arrived at South Georgia island. If I recall correctly, the entire crew survived.

Our sailing overnight was a bit rocky – up to 20-foot swells. Good thing we were all asleep.

20’ swells…. Sounds like you were rocked to sleep. More beautiful sights with the glaciers and the mountains and all the wildlife. A Photographer’s paradise.
